It has been estimated that nowadays more than two-thirds of the people who use the Internet also shop online. In 2000, about 36 million people regularly shopped online, and now conservative estimates place that number has more 83 million. This staggering growth rate indicates that online shopping has become a popular and widely accepted way to shop.
The online retail industry is booming, with expected sales exceeding $120 billion worth of goods this year alone. By simply going online, people around the world - even in the most remote locales - can purchase just about anything their hearts desire. Clothes, music, hot new electronics and even cars are for sale on the Web, and usually at very attractive online discounts.
So what is fueling this shopping revolution? As just mentioned, online discounts are a common incentive. But cheaper prices are not the only compelling reason. In our increasingly busy society, people have less time to physically go from store to store, looking for particular items. By shopping online, consumers can compare prices between not just two or three stores, as in a mall, but between hundreds of stores around the world.
The advent of search engines has also driven the popularity of online shopping. By simply entering a phrase such as “blackberry candles," you can instantly visit a wide variety of online stores that carry blackberry candles. No driving from store to store, walking through aisles, or fighting traffic. Just leisurely, stress-free shopping from the comfort of your own home.
Most research indicates that people who are avid search engine buffs are most likely frequent online shoppers, spending an impressive 35% of total online sales dollars. Those who often utilize search engines, but not as heavily as hard core searchers typically spend a substantial 34% of total online dollars.
Therefore, it stands to reason that the most successful online shopping sites are those which are highly visible in popular search engines.
