The Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count
If you love birds and find them simply mesmerizing to watch, the Christmas Bird Count is a wonderful way to enjoy your passion for birds and become part of something great.
Never heard of the Christmas Bird Count? This wonderful program captures a winter snapshot of bird populations over the course of several decades, and provides birders with a fascinating and unique birding experience. Your participation actually gives you the opportunity to help provide the scientists at the Audubon Society with a clearer understanding of the dynamics of bird populations across North America during the early winter.
The Audubon Society started their annual Christmas Bird Count on Christmas Day in 1900 with just 27 observers in 25 locations across the United States and Canada. The number of participants has since grown to include well over 50,000 citizen observers at 2,000 locations as far-flung as above the Arctic Circle to the dark waters of the Drake Passage off Tierra del Fuego.
Participants in local Audubon Christmas Bird Counts simply count all the birds they see in an assigned 15-mile diameter during a specified 24-hour timeframe. This count typically takes place in late December or early January.
If you’re just getting started in bird watching, the wonderful folks organizing your local Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count will be sure to team you up with an experienced birder. And if you are already an expert birder, many times you will have an area all to yourself. Indeed, this annual event is considered by many to be something of a rite of passage for intermediate birders to join the ranks of expert birders.
Another definite benefit of participating in your local Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count is the chance to meet people who share your fascination with our feathered friends. Birding can tend to be something of a solitary activity, so it’s always a welcome pleasure to meet new friends and renew old friendships with fellow birders.
Before next December, make a commitment to improve your own bird identification skills and to invest those skills in something bigger than yourself. The Christmas Bird Count helps scientists evaluate how bird populations are faring, and is an important part of preserving our planet’s incredible plethora of wildlife.
So get involved! And a great way to start is by honing your bird identification skills. Whether you are an experienced or beginning birder, The Ten Secrets Of Identifying Birds e-book is a great read, and you’re sure to glean some interesting tips that you can put to immediate use in the field.
This e-book will help you establish foundational birding skills, as well as build upon your existing skills. Each of us should never stop learning, and this e-book offers information that can make your birding activities more enjoyable and effective.
