Are Backyard Feeders Just For Wintertime ?

For some reason, many people seem to think that the only time to feed birds in the backyard is in fall and winter. The truth is, you can enjoy bird watching in your own backyard year round, and feeding birds in the summer may be even more rewarding than at any other time of the year.

First, let’s think about why we feed birds. It is certainly not to help the birds, because they can survive very well without any help from us. Case in point, a study in Wisconsin of Black-Capped Chickadees showed that during winter months, these birds obtain only 25 percent of their daily diet from feeders, even when feeder food is readily available. Birds are not dependent on us for food, and so the only reason to feed them is for our own enjoyment.

Feeding birds during the summer can provide even more enjoyment than wintertime feeding for a number of reasons. First, the birds are in their breeding plumage. Also, they are often accompanied by their youngsters. Another compelling reason to fill your feeders in the summertime is that some species that like to frequent feeders in summer are simply not present during the winter. Rose-breasted Grosbeaks in the east and Black-headed Grosbeaks in the west are prime examples. In addition, there are hummingbirds and orioles that are attracted to sugar water throughout the continent during the summer, but which are most typically not found during the cold winter months. Bluebirds, robins, as well as some woodpeckers and sparrows, are all common feeder birds in the summer that migrate to warmer climates during the winter.

So, this summer, feed and water the birds, and see if you don’t get an even bigger kick out of the sport of backyard birding than even before. For more information check out: Birding Software
