How to Choose The Perfect Backpack

Over the past decade, the backpack has become the standard carryall for schoolchildren, who now head out to class lugging more stuff than ever before. Bulging backpacks can strain a child's back, neck and shoulders and lead to poor posture. Here are some practical tips to help choose just the right backpack for your young student. And parents should likewise take these tips to heart when loading their own backpacks for work or leisure.

A wheeled backpack can be a good choice, as the child will be able to tow it along when it's filled with very heavy items. Similar in design to the luggage that many flight attendants now carry, they're becoming increasingly trendy and help take the load off your child's back.

Be sure to take the size of the backpack into consideration. Of course, the bag needs to be built to hold everything your child needs to carry, but don't overdo it and buy something huge. Remember, the backpack should never hang more than 4 inches below the waistline. A huge bag that is out of proportion to your child will not be comfortable, and it will look pretty silly too.

Next, look for the lightest-weight backpack available. When a backpack is fully loaded, it should weigh no more than 10% of your child’s body weight, so starting with a lightweight bag is important. A heavier backpack will cause your child to stoop forward in an attempt to support the additional weight.

A backpack with multiple individual compartments allows items to be placed in the pack with better balance and distribution, while also keeping items secure and easy to access. And here’s a quick backpack tip - make sure that pointy or bulky objects are packed away from the area that will rest on your child's back, and place the heaviest items closet to the body.

Wide padded shoulder straps are also a very important consideration. Non-padded straps are uncomfortable, and can dig into your child's shoulders. Also look for bags that feature belts for the hip and chest to aide in proper weight distribution. Stabilizing compression straps on the sides and bottom will help secure and compress the bag’s contents.
