Choosing The Right Luggage

Mobility, durability, flexibility, expandability, and packability. These are all important “abilities" that absolutely must be considered when purchasing luggage.

First things first. The wheel is here to stay, so make sure that any luggage you even consider buying sports a pair. It is certainly far easier to roll a bag than lug it by its handle or dangle it from your shoulder.

When wheels first appeared on luggage, they were tacked onto four corners on the bottom of conventional suitcases, and were pulled around airports on short little leashes. Revolutionary? Yes. Stable? Definitely not. These little leash numbers were notorious for tipping over when making corners, so this cool idea went back to the drawing board. Nowadays, luggage comes with dual wheels and an extendable handle, making schlepping through airports and down narrow airplane aisles much more manageable.

So, what should you look for in the way of wheeled luggage? Most rolling bags now use inline-skate wheels instead of ball bearings, so they roll more easily and quietly. If you frequently roll your luggage through parking lots, mount curbs or steps, or even cross thick carpeting, you should definitely look for the largest wheels you can find.

Now let’s discuss carry-on luggage. Some airlines are stricter than others, but most airlines limit carry-on luggage to those whose sizes do not exceed 21" or 22" in length with all the dimensions totaling 45" or less. If you would like carry-on limitation info for specific airlines, www.ebags.com is a great resource.

One closing note. For the best flexibility in packing, look for a well-constructed soft-sided, multi-compartment bag made of durable material. A medium-sized bag, about 22" x 14" x 9", will usually meet your travel needs very nicely.
