Before fall migration, many species of warblers lose their bright and distinctive breeding plumage and molt into drab colors in preparation for the winter. For example, male warblers in the fall look very different than they do in the spring, and can be confusing to bird watchers who are trying to identify them.
Protective coloration is most likely the reason that most male warblers become less colorful in fall. Survival during the winter months dressed out in drab feathers becomes more important than attracting mates with their bright feathers of summer. So are there specific tips for locating these beautiful jewels of the woodlands in the autumn months? There actually are several tips that will make your fall warbler expeditions much more satisfying and productive.
The Ten Secrets Of Identifying Birds
First, start by selecting a good field guide. You might want to consider either the National Geographic Society's Field Guide to the Birds of North America or David Sibley's Guide to Birds. Whichever guide you choose, be sure to study it and become familiar with the warblers that will migrate into or through your area.
Unlike their migration in spring, warblers have much duller coloration during the fall months. So extra time, study, and patience will be needed to separate the species that closely resemble one another, such as the Yellow Warbler and Wilson's Warbler.
You’ll find that you can save some identification time by making a list of the fall plumage field marks of warblers that you might expect to see in your area. For example, in the fall, the male Yellow-rumped Warbler loses its black chest and sides, but it retains its yellow rump and to some extent, its yellow throat. Becoming familiar with these more muted field marks will help separate similar-appearing species.
The Ten Secrets Of Identifying Birds
Knowing your warbler songs is of little help in the fall, because the breeding season is over and birds have generally stopped singing. Familiarizing yourself with the call notes of warblers, also called "chips," is much more helpful during this time of year.
Don’t forget to listen for chickadees. Why? Warblers frequently intermingle with chickadees when foraging for food during the fall. So if you locate chickadees, the warblers you seek may well be in the same area.
