At first glance, the bird looks like a strangely drab parrot, desperately misplaced from its tropical habitat.  Suddenly this lovely male bird flashes its flame-colored crest upward as he calls shrilly, batting his tail to the beat of each cry.  At that point, you realize that you have just spotted a male pyrrhuloxia.

The 10 Secrets To Identifying Birds

>

The name pyrrhuloxia is actually derived from two Greek words – pyrrhos, which means flame colored, and loxos which means slanting – referring to the reddish highlights in the bird’s feathers and its curved, parrot-like beak.  These distinct field markings, particularly the curved beak, are important in distinguishing a female pyrrhuloxia from a female Northern Cardinal, as these birds are nearly identical in their buff plumage.

>

A small, open country bird, the pyrrhuloxia is found in the extreme southern parts of Arizona, New Mexico and LACE w:st="on">TexasLACE> where it thrives in thorny desert brush, streamside thickets and nearby gardens.  Usually between 7 ½ and 8 inches long, the pyrrhuloxia is crested with a stout, yellow parrot-like bill.  The male is primarily gray with red on its crest, face, throat, breast, wings and tail.  The female is similar in coloration, but is more grayish buff.

Pyrrhuloxias primarily dine on fruits, seeds and insects, and the brightly colored fruit of Christmas cactus is a favorite winter treat.  Male pyrrhuloxias engage in courtship feeding, bringing tasty berries and other treats to the female, and show deep loyalty to their mates throughout the year.

>

The pyrrhuloxia nest is typically located in mesquite or thorny desert shrub, and is a neat, small cup of twigs, bark and grass.  Eggs are whitish or greenish with brown spots, and the incubation period is 14 days.  The young birds leave the nest about 10 days after hatching.
